- Energy intensity (MWh/SALES IN MILLION €) - Alstom 2011
Energy intensity
Target: 20% reduction from 2008 levels by 2015
The Group’s energy intensity is measured in terms of amount of energy used in relation to sales. Alstom’s has a 20% energy intensity reduction target by 2015, in relation to the base year of 2008.
At the end of 2011, a reduction of the intensity (83) by 12% was achieved, as compared to the base year. The intensity is measured in terms of the amount of energy used in relation to sales. Thermal Power and Transport energy intensity decreases contribute significantly to the Group’s results.

- Intensity of Greenhouse Gas emissions (tons CO2 eq./ sales in million €) - Alstom 2011
Greenhouse gas emission intensity
Target: 20% reduction from 2008 levels by 2015
The Group’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity is measured in terms of tons of CO2 equivalent produced in relation to sales. Since the overwhelming majority of Alstom’s GHG emissions are related to our energy consumption, the two have been tied with the same reduction target of 20% by 2015, in relation to the base year of 2008.
At the end of 2011, an increase of the GHG emissions intensity (32) by 18% was measured as compared to the base year.
The intensity is measured in terms of tons of CO2 equivalent produced in relation to sales. This increase is due to the integration of SF6 gas - due to the integration of the Grid Sector (Grid SF6 emissions have been taken into account since June 2010).

Additional GHG Details
- Emissions from company vehicles are slightly increasing this year due to the integration of the Grid Sector. On a like-for-like basis compared to 2010, the consumption is stable (14 ktons in 2011 vs. 15 ktons in 2010).
- The Group’s emissions related to air business travels managed by its main contractor were estimated at approximately 136ktons of CO2 for 2011, based on the methodology validated by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME).
Alstom publishes emissions data in the Carbon Disclosure Project survey, an initiative launched by a group of investors. The data cover both direct and indirect emissions, with the exception of emissions from project sites.
