Local Communities

Everywhere the Group is located, Alstom works together with local communities and collaborates with local partners on sustainable development projects focused around tomorrow’s technologies, training, job creation and environmental preservation.

Supporting start-up industries


Alstom invests in innovative companies that deal in the energy, renewable energy and sustainable mobility industries, through funds such as:

  • Emertec 4, a venture capital firm that supports 12 start-ups, alongside the French National Institute for Energy Research (INRE), the CEA, GDF Suez, CDC Enterprises and the RATP (Paris’s transit authority).
  • Aster 2, an international fund invested in energy and chemical start-ups, co-managed with Schneider Electric and Rhodia. 
  • Horizon, a renewable energy and energy efficiency venture capital firm created with participation from Rotem Industries and Gefen Biomed Investments.

Partner of French competitive hubs


Alstom engineers carry out work with other companies and universities in 7 of France’s 71 national competitive hubs. These silicon-valley-like institutions and communities offer opportunities to work on:

  • on-board systems (Sytem@tic)
  • future transport (I-trans)
  • microtechniques
  • new energies (Tenerrdis)
  • nuclear hubs
  • renewable energies
  • power electronics

Alstom also presides over Mecafuture, which coordinates seven mechanical engineering competitive hubs.

Supporting local economic and social development


Alstom provides training and recruitment to local communities around the world.

In Brazil: 

  • Porto Velho, Alstom is one of two partners behind the Amazonian mechanical and metallurgic industry (IMMA) which built and inaugurated a hydroelectric equipment factory in a region without heavy industry.
  • The Guaporé project trained 900 youth from the agricultural sectors and hired 350.
  • The Escola Formare Alstom in Taubaté trained 34 youths from disadvantaged families for a year with help from Alstom employees.

In South Africa: 

  • Alstom trained 650 workers and technicians and 176 engineers, including project managers, quality controllers and financiers.
  • Alstom supports the engineering faculty at Wits University and has funded bursaries for 55 engineers in mechanical, electrical and urban engineering.

In France:  

  • Alstom has committed to Agenda 21, which provides for local recruitment and partnerships with educational institutions and suppliers in the region of La Courneuve.

Supporting education


Alstom supports education worldwide by:

  • funding schools in Durgapur and Shahabad, in India
  • fighting against illiteracy in the United States.
  • donating to schools in Poland
  • promoting scientific and environmental education in South Africa
  • partnering with “Elles Bougent”, a French association which promotes engineering careers to women
