Why did you decide to come to Alstom? I had completed specialised studies in heat transfer and turbomachinery at University. Taking up a job with multinational company like Alstom seemed like the perfect opportunity to put theoretical knowledge gained into practice as they are involved in boiler and turbine design.
Why do you like working at Alstom? Working as an engineer for Alstom isn't your everyday 9-5 desk job. It allows you to gain firsthand experience with site based activities and design work in the office. I also enjoy working and travelling with senior engineers who show you 'tricks of the trade' and analytical know-how you cannot find in a text book. We also get to work with sub-contractors and engineers from other disciplines which is a good learning experience.
What exciting projects have you worked on at Alstom? Munmorah Mill Upgrade - Refurbishing and improving the performance of a 1950 coal mill design to meet today’s power demands and industry standards.
Wallerawang Mill Modifications - Modifying the existing mill to improve boiler efficiency and reduce green house gas emissions.
Playford 'B' Power Station - Remaining plant lifetime evaluation study.
What are your goals at Alstom – what are you working to achieve? My immediate goal is to complete the Alstom Engineering Graduate Program and acquire a 'Chartered Engineer' status from Engineers Australia. In the long run, I would like to see myself getting involved with Alstom projects and business units in other countries.
What would you say to a new-starter at Alstom? Alstom offers a unique and diverse opportunity to young graduate engineers. They would be able to choose from a wide variety of areas to specialise in around a power plant. Most of all, Alstom has a good working atmosphere!
