Job Title: Operations Manager, Australia
Sector/BU: Thermal Systems - Environmental Control Systems
Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) and Bachelor of Commerce - University of Sydney

Why did you decide to come to Alstom?
I was recruited directly from University by ABB through their 'Women in Engineering' program. ABB was later merged, and then taken over by Alstom. Both ABB and Alstom are large international companies that provide many varied opportunities for career development.

Why do you like working at Alstom?
I have been fortunate in my 10 years with Alstom to experience many varied positions, and living and working in USA, France and Australia. I have been exposed to all aspects of the local businesses, from sales and tendering, to project execution, and a more general global role in marketing and product development. To be able to interact and understand all levels of the business has been exciting and rewarding, both professionally and personally. I have also benefitted from having supportive mentors and managers who have encouraged me to try new challenges.

What exciting projects have you worked on at Alstom?
I have always worked in the environmental and emissions control business of Alstom, and have been involved with projects in USA, France, Australia and New Caledonia to help generators reduce the emissions from their coal fired power stations.

What are your goals at Alstom – what are you working to achieve?
My current position is a combination of general business responsibilities and reporting, and overseeing execution of local projects. My likely next step is as Project Director for a larger turnkey project, or a business role within the region.

What would you say to a new-starter at Alstom? Be open to any opportunity that arises, and don't be afraid to apply your general engineering skills to fields outside your formal degree. My formal engineering qualifications are in electrical engineering, but most of my working career has been spent working with chemical, mechanical and civil engineers.
