Macarthur substation for the Sydney Region

To ensure electricity distribution to the growing communities in the suburbs to the south of Sydney, TransGrid needed to establish more bulk supply points within the NSW sub-transmission voltage level network.

Inaugurated on 25th August 2009, the Macarthur 330/132/66 kV substation is now providing increased capacity to both Macarthur and Campbelltown areas at 66 kV as well as providing for the development of the south west sector (Bringelly & Catherine Fields) land release area using 132 kV as the sub-transmission voltage level.

The substation was sourced both locally and internationally. The transformers were supplied by Alstom’s Rocklea Brisbane factory – one 375 MVA 330/132/11 kV and one 250 MVA 330/66/11 kV. Alstom also supplied and installed 362 kV GL315 Live Tank Circuit Breakers from Alstom Grid France; 145 kV & 72.5 kV Dead Tank Circuit Breakers and 362 kV Capacitive Voltage transformers from Alstom Grid USA; 362 kV Line Traps from Alstom Grid Brazil; Protection Relays from Alstom Grid UK and also other major suppliers. The control room was built using double brick construction containing duplicate protection for the incoming transmission line circuits, two transformers and one 132 kV and six 66 kV feeders as well as other key components.
