Objective: Use natural means to fight soil erosion and provide energy
Each year, monsoons feed fast-flowing tirbutaries of the Mahi river, sweeping away soil from ravines. For Rajupura, Nizampura and Sindhrot, three neighboring villages in Gujarat province, India, the rainy season merely announces the decline of yet more of the land available for agriculture. In addition, women a day a week gathering wood for fire, and doing so affects the forest and its ability to fight erosion.
The Alstom Foundation teamed up with the Gujarat Nature Conservation Society to:
- plant vetiver to bind the soil and restore local agriculture
- promote solar and biomass-based energies to replace wood harvesting
- education on potable water and hygiene
