Power Transformers are key components fort he electrical value chain and also due to their long-lasting performance they need to be very reliable. The isolation system of transformers suffers an aging effect related to temperature and load effects.
In the future the need of reliable transformers will increase and the hermetically air sealing will be crucial. Therefore Alstom Grid developed the Hermetic Transformer to achieve a reduced Cellulose and Oil aging. With the warming of the isolation and cooling oil the increased volume is not stored in an expansion tank, but in special dedicated oil bags of the transformer boiler.
The advantages are the extension of the life cycle, an increased capacity and reduced maintenance with a decreased oil ageing effect, as no air dehumidifiers and no water compensation are needed. Transformers of this kind are successful in operation since ten years now and are produced nowadays up to 200 MVA and 245 kV.
