Demonstration projects

Rollout of smart grid solutions began in transmission grids and is now expanding into distribution. The next step is to involve all partners, networks and stakeholders by developing new large-scale, end-to-end smart grid projects for grid and city operators. Alstom has developed a number of demonstration projects in leading smart grid countries, in partnership with governments, utilities, industries and academic and research institutions. These include:

  • FENIX (European Union)

    10/02/2012

A pioneering smart grid demonstration, Project FENIX ran in the UK from 2005 to 2009. The objective was to make Distributed Energy Resource (DER) systems a cost efficient, secure and sustainable solution for the European Union’s electricity supply system.

  • Issy Grid (France)

    10/02/2012

France’s first smart grid eco-district, IssyGrid®, is a demonstration project aimed at optimising energy usage in the French town of Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris.

  • Nice Grid (France)

    10/02/2012

The NiceGrid smart district demonstrator project, developed with ERDF, the French Distribution System Operator, and located in the city of Nice (South Coast of France), aims at developing several microgrids with integrated renewable energy sources and electricity storage.

  • North Carolina Smart Grid Project (USA)

    10/02/2012

This project led by the US Department of Energy is designed to integrate distributed energy resources into the electrical grid efficiently in order to help the DOE reach its smart grid targets for 2030, including a 40% improvement in system efficiency.

  • PNW-SGDP (USA)

    10/02/2012

The Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project (PNW-SGDP) tests new combinations of smart grid solutions in homes and on the grid in five states (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming) covering more than 60,000 consumers.

  • TWENTIES (European Union)

    10/02/2012

The EU “TWENTIES” smart grid demonstrator project aims to display, through large-scale demonstrations, the benefits of critical technologies to the improvement of the pan-European transmission network, enabling Europe to increase its use of renewable energies by 2020.
