Alstom’s Human Resources policy is founded on key concepts that include equal opportunity, respect for diversity, dialogue, as well as health and safety. Diverse nationalities, cultures and mindsets make for a stronger workforce and Alstom firmly believes in offering the same opportunities to every employee.
Equal opportunity
At Alstom, equal opportunity begins with equal pay for equal work among the women and men employed by the Group: identical job descriptions and qualifications receive identical pay, regardless of gender.
Coming from a traditionally male dominated industry, Alstom actively encourages women to consider the fields of engineering and sciences through several programmes and organisations:
- “Elles Bougent” is a French NGO that promotes women’s professional advancement through discussions, site visits and mentorships under female engineers and managers,
- “WAVE”, or Women Adding Value to Engineering, provides a network of over 170 women across 20 countries to help expand career opportunities within the Group,
- The Society of Women Engineers and the Society of Women in Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology,
- “Un avenir ensemble” helps launch careers by helping underprivileged women pursue graduate studies.
Promoting upward mobility
Alstom promotes upward mobility worldwide through programmes in a number of countries. In Argentina, for example, Alstom supports training programmes that provide the equivalent of secondary school diplomas, paving the way to better qualified jobs, and in France, the Promotion Cadre programme prepares Alstom employees for managerial positions.
In Brazil’s Escola Formare Alstom, youths receive a one-year technical and behavioural training programme.
In Paris, Alstom reaches out to young people from underprivileged neighbourhoods for recruitment and apprenticeships.
Employing handicapped people
Alstom works actively to bring the disabled into the workforce, complying with applicable legislation in the countries where it does business. In just one example, work clothes for Alstom Power employees in China have been manufactured for many years by Hong Kong’s Factory for the Blind.
