Wind Power: renewable energy source with promising future
Wind power is one of the world’s oldest energy sources and still offers a bright future of new development opportunities. Over the past decade, its production capacity has been multiplied by ten.
Even so, wind generation is still a minor source of energy when compared to coal, nuclear and hydro, accounting for only 1% of the world’s power generation capacity. This is expected to change in decades to come as countries around the world are striving to minimise their environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and boosting renewable energies, such as wind. The International Energy Agency projects wind power could provide 12% of global demand for electricity by 2050.

Contracts and milestones:
-
May 2008: Alstom wins a contract to supply around 300 MW of wind turbines to Iberdrola Renewables, one of the world’s leading wind power companies, the first large agreement the Group signed after the acquisition.
-
May 2009: Alstom appointed exclusive supplier by The Tokyo Electric Power Company for a wind farm in Shizuoka Prefecture (Japan), highlighting Alstom’s expertise in customising its designs to conform to stringent local standards (earthquakes and air turbulences). This is the first wind contract in Japan since the acquisition of Ecotècnia.
Alstom to install 38 MW wind farm in Yecla (Spain) for Spanish renewable energy group Elecdey. This broadens the Group’s presence in the Spanish wind market, which ranks third after USA and Germany in terms of installed base. -
September 2009: Alstom wins a 15 MW project in Clachan Flats, Scotland, giving it access to the UK’s wind market. This is an important entry into a country which has set the target of generating up to 35% of its electricity from renewable sources, notably wind, by 2020.
-
October 2009: Alstom installs a 26 MW wind farm in Maeswyn, South Wales, its second wind project in the UK.
-
December 2009: Alstom signs a memorandum of intent with the Government of the Brazilian state of Bahia to install its first industrial wind turbine assembly facility in the country. The new facility will be dedicated to the assembly of wind turbines with an annual capacity of up to 300 MW.
-
April 2010: Alstom to supply, install and commission new wind farm in Akhfenir, in the Kingdom of Morocco, for Nareva Holding that will generate more than 100 MW of renewable energy. This contract underlines Morocco’s commitment to reaching 42% of its electricity generation capacity from renewable sources by 2020, one third of it from wind energy.
