Washington DC 05 October, 2010 -- Officials of Alstom Grid, a world leader in the field of electricity transmission and electric grids for over a century, announced that Dr. Lawrence E. Jones, Ph.Dd (EE), has been appointed by the United States Department of Commerces National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to a three-year term on the newly formed 15-member Smart Grid Advisory Committee (SGAC). The appointment was initially announced by NIST on September 27, 2010.

The SGAC was established to advise the Director of NIST, Peter Gallagher, in carrying out duties authorized by section 1305 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. The SGAC will provide input to NIST on Smart Grid Standards, Priorities and Gaps, and on the overall direction, status and health of the Smart Grid implementation by the Smart Grid industry, including identification of issues and needs. The Committees input to NIST will be used to help guide Smart Grid Interoperability Panel activities and also assist in directing research and standards activities.

Alstom Grid President Henri Poupart-Lafarge said, Were extremely proud that NIST chose Dr. Jones to sit on this important committee. The need for Smart Grids is already impacting the full electricity value chain, from power generation, throughout electrical grids themselves and right to the level of the consumer. As a global leader both in electrical grids and power generation, Alstom is active in developing, piloting and implementing smart solutions for delivery of more energy with greater flexibility in todays complex environment. We are honored for Dr. Jones to share his experience and knowledge to help direct Smart Grid work in the United States.

Dr. Jones added, Im humbled to be in the company of the other members of the SGAC and believe that with my experience within the industry, I bring to the table some global insights aligned with what were hearing from different stakeholder groups, as they work through the task of turning the promise of smart grids into the reality of efficiency, environmental benefits and cost savings.

Dr. Jones joined Alstom Grid in 2000 and is currently the global Director of Strategy and Special Projects, within the Network Management Solutions product line, for which Alstom Grid is the global market leader. Dr. Jones also leads Renewable Energy Integration activities for the product line, which is one of the key drivers of the Smart Grid. Dr. Jones has published numerous articles in technical journals, industry magazines and conference proceedings and is affiliated with several professional societies and academic institutions. He is Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Chairman of the Federal Energy and Smart Grid Committee of TechAmerica. He represented Alstom Grid (previously known as AREVA T&D Inc.) and actively participated in, several of the foundational meetings and activities of the GridWise Alliance 2003 2005. He is a member of the GridWise Implementation Work Group.

Dr. Jones received his MSc, Licentiate and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.
