Americas electricity grid is about to get a little smarter with some help from Alstom Grid and the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE). On November 17, 2010, the DoE announced that Alstom Grid (formerly Areva T&D) is one of five companies to receive funding for new Smart Grid demonstration projects across the country. The goal: to make Americas energy grids smarter, more reliable and more flexible in their ability to carry power generated from renewable sources.

This newest Smart Grid demonstration project will focus on Alstoms e-terradistribution Integrated Distribution Management System (IDMS) platform, which helps utilities streamline the flow of electricity throughout the nations grids. Using e-terradistribution, Alstom will explore ways of efficiently enhancing the U.S. grid with a range of clean energy technologies. These include everything from renewable power sources such as solar, wind and hydro, to charging stations for plug-in electric vehicles.

Working closely with several partners, including Duke Energy, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, the University of Washington and the University of Connecticut, Alstom will work to ready the grid for the expansion of these distributed energy technologies, while also improving reliability, boosting energy efficiency and lowering the countrys overall carbon footprint.
