Within the framework of the 4th Infrastructure Sector Meeting, Antonio
Oporto proposed the development of new tram systems in Spanish cities as
this type of investment is among the most productive that can be made
in situations such as at present.

The creation of urban
transport infrastructure does not only involve a high level of
investment generating economic activity and employment during the
construction phase. Tram systems bring with them a series of benefits
both for the cities that introduce them and for the national economy as a
whole.

In particular, the set-up of these systems creates
economic activity and employment throughout their lifespan thanks to
operation and maintenance activities. They improve mobility and local
competitiveness through efficient, environmentally-friendly and
sustainable urban transport; they modernise cities and improve their
inhabitants' quality of life; and, furthermore, they generate activity
and employment in manufacturing the vehicles and electro-mechanical
equipment necessary for their commercial operation.

For Antonio
Oporto, 1.5 billion over a 6-year period would be enough investment to
introduce this mode of transport to 7 medium-sized Spanish cities where
trams are considered the ideal core mode of transport for their urban
transport networks. If this plan goes forward, the bidding processes for
these systems would have to begin within the next 12 months for them to
really fulfil one of their main aims: reviving the economy.
