The Alstom project team delivering a steam turbine unit to a power plant project in The Netherlands has received the Safety Award 2011 from customer E.ON.

The customer cited Alstoms very well organised approach to maintaining and executing its safety regulations at the Maasvlakte power plant, along with the pro-active attitude of the project team members, the controlled primary process and the excellent sub-contractor management procedures. Also mentioned was Alstoms positive motivation, practical suggestions and the self-critical view on targeted actions. The award was presented by Aris Blankenspoor, EON Project Director and head of the entire Maasvlakte Power Plant 3 (MPP3) operation at the Maasvlakte.

Alstom supplies the steam turbine unit for the new fossil-fuel power plant at the Maasvlakte power station in Rotterdam. Like the existing Maasvlakte power plant, the new unit will be able to co-fire biomass and is being designed for subsequent retrofitting with carbon capture technology. Strategically located near the North Sea and the Rotterdam harbour area, the new power plant can maximally profit from seawater for cooling and deep waterways for supply of coal and biomass.

Alstom provides a 1110 MW steam turbine generator package* and carries out transport to the site, full erection, commissioning and trial runs. This technology will contribute to a net efficiency of 46%, compared with a European average of 36%, thus improving the environmental performance significantly.  This new generation of steam turbine generator technology, resulting in high plant efficiency, is key to significantly reducing CO2 emissions in coal-fired power plants while considerably improving power plant economics.

"In this project Alstom combines state-of-the-art technology, says Aris Blankenspoor, general project manager of E.ONs Maasvlakte Power Plant 3 project.

The new Maasvlakte power plant is scheduled to start commercial operation from 2013.

*The package includes 1 STF 100 steam turbine with heat extraction, GIGATOP generator and condenser, and 1 x boiler-feed-pump-turbine (BFPT 245) + condenser.
