Asia focus sees heating element production line opened in India to meet local demand for Alstom technology.

Alstom's strategy of focusing on Asia was further cemented on 28 November, when Steam Auxiliary Components Vice-President Thorsten Holl officially opened the new 'Shanel 5' production line in Shahabad, India. The facility will manufacture the latest marques of heating transfer surfaces or elements for air preheaters.

To save time a manufacturing line was shipped over from its original location at the auxiliary components parent facility in Wellsville, the United States, and refurbished in situ. This enabled the heating element shop to be set up in less than a year.

Previously Alstom supplied auxiliary components like air preheater elements through licensees in India. The establishment of a fully automated, computer-controlled element line at the Shahabad facility means that more customers will have access to the company's advanced technology, and give Alstom a manufacturing foothold in the region.

The venture comes at a time when many Indian power generators are looking to upgrade and benefit from the greater efficiencies of supercritical technology, which puts Shanel 5 or 'Shahabad New Equipment Line 5' in a very favourable position. The order book has already started to fill up, with major Indian power players making enquiries.

With the opening of this new facility Alstom will be supporting not just the local Indian market, but also East Asian and Far East territories such as Malaysia and Indonesia.
