Alstom Grid has delivered in record time the first phase of the day-ahead and intra-day market applications of its Smart Dispatch Market Management solution to Terna S.P.A., the Italian Transmission System Operator (TSO). These applications went live on January 1, 2011 after being configured for the new Italian energy market rules. A second phase will be implemented in 2011 in order to allow additional developments on the system.

The Smart Dispatch solution has a very flexible framework allowing Terna to quickly comply and adapt to changes in local electricity regulations. In addition, the solution includes cutting-edge technology and Smart Grid-ready applications to optimally and reliably manage large electricity networks and bring energy market efficiency benefits to end customers. With its national control center operating in Rome, Terna is one of the largest TSOs in the world that manages the Italian transmission grid with over 62,000 kms of high voltage lines from 150 kV to 380 kV, interconnecting six countries and with an annual electricity demand of over 57,000 MW.

Alstoms Smart Dispatch solution will allow Terna to further optimise its dispatching procedures.  More importantly, it will increase our flexibility to adapt to the rapidly changing market operating regulations in Italy and the European energy market at large, said Francesco Del Pizzo, Director of Terna Dispatching Operations.

This contract was a first of its kind for Alstom Grid in Italy. We welcome the opportunity to partner with Terna and bring our unique e-terra network solutions and experience in energy market operations and dispatch scheduling to support Ternas need for optimised operations today. This suite of applications will provide Terna with an evolutionary platform to manage increasing future energy flows and renewable energy integration into the grid, said Karim El- Naggar, Vice President, Network Management Solutions, Alstom Grid.
