The Alstom group pays special attention to Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) issues. Alstom has invested a lot in improving safety at work. Also Alstom Power Finland has executed a comprehensive EHS campaign which was launched in the beginning of 2008. As a result of these actions Alstom Power has now worked in Finland five hundred (500) days without any lost time accidents.

Alstom’s goal is to minimize all minor accidents and prevent all major accidents. The Injury Frequency Rate, IFR, includes all accidents that would lead to at least one day’s absence from work per one million working hours.

A global EHS campaign started at Alstom in September 2008. Alstom Power Finland joined also a “Site Focus on Safety” (SFS) program, which aims to decrease all accidents, especially major ones, at the sites by education and instruction with special attention on high risk activities. A “zero tolerance” on personal protection equipment at sites was introduced, practices to make risk assessments and practises to report near hits and incidents at sites were improved. Also the root causes of the accidents were analyzed more carefully. The SFS campaign was supported by strong internal communication. We have also started the EHS Passport training for our supervisors and employees.

The impact of these actions has been dramatic as we can see from the safety KPI - in the IFR (Injury Frequency Rate) Alstom Finland Power reached the zero limit in November 2010. The EHS culture cannot be chanced at once and we continue to improve safety of our employees at work by internal and external audits. Continuous improvement is the key to success.
