Alstom wins 80 million euro contract to extend line 5 of Milans metro system

Alstom, as member of the Società di Progetto Metro 5consortium, signed with the Municipality of Milan, a contract agreement on the extension of Milans metro system to the San Siro football stadium. According to the terms of the agreement, Alstom will supply for Milans first automatic driverless metro line, the infrastructure, including the electric supply systems, electrical substations, traction systems, intrusion and fire detection systems, tracks and the platform screen doors to ensure passengers safety.

The consortium is composed of Alstom, Astaldi, Ansaldo STS, Ansaldo Breda and the Milan city transport company (ATM). The overall contract for Milans new metro line totals 778 million Euro, and Alstoms share represents 80 Million Euros. In 2006, Alstom signed a contract for 46 million Euros, providing infrastructure and project management respectively, for phase 1 of Milans metro line 5 and the project is the most important project under way in the infrastructure sector in Italy.

Milans metro line 5 (6.4 km including 10 stops from Garibaldi to San Siro) will be completed before the opening of Expo 2015 (Universal Exposition), hosted by Milan, and run fully underground, representing approximately 13 km in length and crossing the city from Bignami station to San Siro with 19 stations. Its transport capacity will amount to 26 million passengers per year. The Bignami-Garibaldi line is slated for commercial service in 2013 and ATM, the public transport operator of the city of Milan, will manage the service of metro line 5.

Alstom Transport's Infrastructure activity

In fulfilling this contract, Alstom will draw on its expertise in the area of infrastructure. This activity includes electrification of railway lines, track laying, modernization of existing lines and electromechanical systems for new railway lines, tramways and metros. Alstom has already electrified more than 10,000 kilometers and has laid more than 2,000 kilometers of track. The company has been awarded large-scale contracts for Singapore's automatic metro, China's high-speed Shi-Tai line and the High Speed 1 Paris-London link. Moreover, Alstom has supplied a tramway system to Bordeaux (France), which was the first city in the world to select APS (catenary less) technology now adopted by other cities as Reims, Angers, Orléans, Tours, Brazilia and is now managing the construcion in Dubai of the first full tramway line powered without catenary.
