Alstom Ltd, in conjunction with Drax Power Limited and National Grid, today welcomed the announcement by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) that the consortium's application for partial European Union funding for a CCS demonstration project is being forwarded to the European Investment Bank for consideration.

The proposed project is a new stand-alone, 426MW (gross) oxy-fired carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstration plant based at Drax's site at Selby, North Yorkshire.

As part of the project, National Grid, together with an experienced offshore partner, will develop a transportation system out to the southern North Sea where the CO2 will be permanently stored.  The project could help support National Grids development of a cluster of CCS projects in the Humber area.
