Alstom and its Chinese JV to equip 100 km of metro line in Shanghai and Kunming with CBTC signalling systems

Alstom and its Chinese joint venture CASCO have been awarded two contracts by Shanghai Shentong Metro Co., Ltd and Kunming Rail Transit Co., Ltd, to supply advanced signalling systems for the 59 km Shanghai metro line 16 and the 42 km Kunming metro line 1 respectively. With these two contracts, Alstom and CASCO are maintaining their strong presence in Chinas 1st tier cities while expanding into 2nd tier cities.

Alstom, together with CASCO, will deliver the Urbalis CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) technology that is an advanced train control system which integrates network communications with data transmission by radio. The Urbalis CBTC system optimises the running speed of trains, permits the shortest headways between trains, and manages accurate station stopping, while ensuring safety.

Shanghai Line 16, formerly known as Line 11 South Extension, currently under construction, will run in Pudong New Area from Longyang Road to Lingang New in Lingang New City and is 59 km long with 13 stations. Shanghai Line 16 will operate at 120 km/h, the highest speed among metro lines in China. The line also features flexible train service configurations, which is the first time this is adopted by a metro line in China. The entry into commercial service of Shanghai Line 16 Phase 1 is planned for early 2013.

Kunming Line 1 is 42 km long with 31 stations, extending from Bus Terminal North in Panlong District to Kunming Radio and TV University station. Built in a plateau city located at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level, Kunming Line 1 South Phase is planned to start trial running in 2013.

These two contracts represent important milestones for Alstom as they demonstrate we are not only successful in the 1st tier cities in China; we are also becoming the preferred supplier in the 2nd tier cities, Ms Ling Fang, Managing Director of Alstom Transport China commented. Urbalis was first sold in China to the major cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou that are presently constructing some of the worlds biggest metro networks. Today many other cities, notably 2nd tier cities are developing or planning metro networks with several lines. We are confident that through our technological expertise, long-term partnership and localization strategy, we are well-positioned to benefit from the huge growth opportunities in the mass transit market in China.

Alstoms Urbalis technology was successfully installed on the driverless North-East Line of Singapores metro, the largest automatic metro in the world, in 2003 and is gaining momentum in China. Over the past 7 years, Alstom and CASCO have put into revenue service the Urbalis signalling system on 7 lines .
