From 20 - 22 September, Alstom participated in HydroVision Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. The event provided Brazilian hydropower-related business, government and agency leaders a unique opportunity to meet and discuss issues and challenges the Brazilian hydropower industry faces, and how hydropower can help meet Brazil's growing energy needs.

Hydropower accounts for 85% of Brazils power production.

Alstom, present in Brazil for 55 years, has played a significant role in the development of this hydro capacity including providing products and services for hydropower projects including Itaipu the worlds second largest hydropower plant, - Tucuruí and most recently Jirau and Santo Antônio, as well as thermal projects such as TermoBahia and ThyssenKrup CSA.

Overall, Alstom has supplied more than 100 hydro turbines and generators to the Brazilian market over the past ten years and its equipment accounts for 35% of Brazils installed hydro capacity.

Conference sessions covered latest technology trends including operation and maintenance of existing plants, refurbishment and modernisation of older installations, as well as small hydropower solutions, fish-friendly hydro turbines and monitoring and control systems.

  • Resources of small hydro plants in Brazil Small hydro projects for Low Head - Cesar Bernardini, Marcos V. de Moraes, Johnny Rocha.
  • Low head solution for small hydro plant widely used for medium - R. Rigolim, José Savoia, R. Vasconcellos.
  • Kaplan Turbines in response to different needs - Fabrice Loiseau.
  • IEC 61850 Important challenges for hydro generation - Antonio Carlos Padoan.
  • Safety devices for Kaplan Turbines - Adailson Vieira, Benedito Rodrigues.

At the event, Alstom sponsored and staffed the Cyber Café, an 'online oasis' for conference attendees to access the Internet while enjoying a cup of coffee, where Alstom technical and sales staff is at hand to discuss latest advances in hydro technology and Alstom's wide range of leading hydropower products and services.
