Alstom technical and commercial managers joined industry colleagues at the Power Gen Asia conference and exhibition; this 3-day event focused on the unique issues of the region.

The critical challenge facing the region is how to serve the rapidly expanding power needs of these growing economies while minimising the impact on the environment.

A major conclusion from the conference was that there is no single technology or fuel that can meet the goals of affordable, clean and reliable power for Asia.

Rather, energy planners must utilise a mix of fossil, nuclear and renewable power generation, maximising the use of domestic resources, while drawing from global state of the art generation technologies to achieve the highest efficiency and reliabliity.

During the conference, Alstom senior management and technical experts contributed in many sessions on the agenda:

  • Wouter van Wersch, Senior VP Sales & Marketing Asia, joined other industry executives on the Plenary Panel to discuss 'Supplying a Power Hungry Region'
  • Mike Davies, Senior Product Specialist, addressed improvements to the installed steam plant fleet, with 'Component Retrofits for the Chinese and East Asian Steam Turbine Fleets'
  • Jacques Mercier, R&D Programme Manager, presented on the increasing need for power plants to operate in dynamic modes, ' Dynamic Coal Plant to Secure Electrical Grids'
  • Harpreet Singh, Product Manager HRSG, discussed the impact of cyclic operation on the HRSG, 'HRSG Designs to Meet Today's Cycling and Fast Start-up Requirements'
  • Khawar Syed, Group Leader Combustion Technology, addressed the impact of changing gas supplies, 'Fuel Flexibility Capabilities of Alstom's GT24/26 Gas Turbines'
  • Matthias Hiddemann, Regional Product Manager, presented Alstom's advanced gas turbine technology, 'Next Generation GT24/26 Further Enhancements and Updates'
