Yesterday, Alstom’s Karim El-Naggar, VP Network Management Solutions (NMS), joined U.S. Senator’s Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), the University of Washington (UW) and others to demonstrate efforts by local technology partners on the Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project (PNW-SGDP). During discussions with the Senators, Mr. El-Naggar described how the company’s Redmond, WA based Global Center of Excellence for Network Management Solutions (NMS) is working with, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE), Battelle, and Bonneville Power Authority (BPA) to carry out the (PNW-SGDP) demonstration, the largest of its kind in the country.

As Karim explained, “We are proud to be a part of this groundbreaking project which will help us improve our technology to meet the evolving energy demands of the future. Our local NMS team of 400 is driving our participation by not only ensuring the reliability of the project’s physical grid , but also by enabling transactions to flow by calculating the dynamic price of electricity and sharing that information back out to the project participants enabling them to make informed decisions about their energy consumption.”

The $178MUSD project funded by stimulus dollars and public/private partners was established to find better ways of managing the complexity of the electricity grid. As energy resources change so do the demands on the grid. Demonstration projects like PNW help partners unlock the ways to better manage the complex grid.

Since we first opened our doors in the Seattle area in 1978 we have had a strong relationship with UW. Many of our top experts come out of UW and today we employ 65 UW graduates including 11 with PhDs. The success of our technology relies on those who bring it to life, that is why Alstom Grid is committed to our long-standing support of UW Power Systems Program, said Karim.

Alstom experts were on site throughout the day to share more information on the products, technology, and ways the company is working to improve the future of electricity. The companysNMS e-terra product line manages over 70% of the generation capacity in U.S. energy markets and controls over 40% of the power flowing within the U.S.
