This week, Alstom showcased its offshore wind expertise at AWEA Offshore 2012 in Virginia Beach, VA, where the biggest names in the industry gathered for discussions and presentations on this exciting source of renewable energy.

During a panel presentation, Alstom’s Lionel Chailleux, North American Power Generation Commercial Director, addressed one of the most critical components of an offshore wind project, the electrical service platform, which connects the turbines themselves to the onshore electrical grid. Lionel outlined the many criteria that determine the design of a platform including safety, comfort, access, electrical performances, installation process, and so CAPEX and OPEX costs.

"Alstom works with customers to find the solutions that meet all the criteria whether it be a helicopter pad, higher voltage capacity, or more amenities for crews.  Through our knowledge and experience in offshore installations, Alstom is able to share what it learns to help improve the design and technology while keeping costs down,” said Lionel.

Throughout the week other Alstom representatives discussed the latest innovations, challenges and milestones including the inauguration of the company’s Haliade 150-6MW next generation offshore turbine, the largest in the world. Another hot topic was an offshore wind research project funded by the Department of Energy (DOE). This effort, led by Alstom, focuses on the development of advanced control systems and integrated innovative sensors that increase energy production and lower the capital cost of offshore wind turbines.
