DTech 2013 is coming to end here in San Deigo…It's been an exciting week jam packed with exciting news and events.
For Alstom, day three started with a media interview where Alstom experts Karim El Naggar and Laurent Schmitt spoke to Transmission & Distribution World about the control room and broader impacts of Smart Grid technology.
Our daily web interview focused on Alstom's growing Substation Automation Solutions (SAS) business. Michael Atkinson, President of Alstom Grid NAM, joined Herve Amosse, VP of Alstom's SAS and Manford Kwan of ASAT Solutions Inc. to discuss how our recent acquisition of that company impacts Alstom's strategy for the North American market.
Here what they had to say but, first, thanks to all for a great show, and see you in 2014!
Live Update from DistribuTECH - Wed., 30 Jan - 5:45 p.m.
Alstom kicked-off the day with yet another headline - the go-live of a new Alstom Distribution Management System at Wisconsin's Madison Gas and Electric. That's four major DMS announcements in just under one week - three go-lives (Alabama Power, Nashville Electric and today's news on Madison Gas and Electric), and the new Smart Grid alliance with Capgemini. For more on that, check out our DistribuTECH Headlines.
Before this morning's announcement, Alstom Smart Grid expert Laurent Schmitt sat down with Smart Grid News' Jesse Berst to discuss the advent of Smart Grids and Sustainable Cities.
We caught up with Laurent at Alstom's DistribuTECH booth, where he and Christophe Arnault from French Grid opeartor ERDF explained real-world projects that are realizing the promise of Smart Grid technology.

Live Update from DistribuTECH - Tues., 29 Jan - 8:28 p.m.
Alstom’s first day at DistribuTECH 2013 started off with breaking news – the launch of a new alliance with Capgemini to jointly tackle smart grid projects and, at the same time, the industry’s first-ever cloud-based integrated power distribution management system (IDMS)? Why is that so important you ask? Because moving to a secure cloud environment allows electric utilities to deploy the latest grid management tech while lowering its overall cost.
Later on, Karim El Naggar, head of Alstom’s global NMS business, joined Alabama Power’s Bill Mintz on-camera to discuss that company’s recent launch of a new Alstom distribution management system.
Here’s what they had to say…
At the Alstom booth and during conference presentations, company experts demonstrated a range of Smart Grid technologies, from control room management systems to substation automation solutions. Executives held meetings with reporters from Electric Light & Power, Electric Energy T&D and Smart Grid News. While network management solutions (NMS) remain a priority, these chats also touched on how Alstom’s recent acquisition of ASAT Solutions, Inc. is propelling the company into the North American substation automation market.
Check back tomorrow for the latest on-site news, and videos offering more insight on Smart Cities, substation automation and more…
