Alstom Grid, a global expert in electric grid performance, was chosen by the French Transmission System Operator, Réseau de Transport dElectricité (RTE) to advance into the next phase of their IPES* system.

The existing IPES platform, delivered by Alstom Grid in 2009, is based on Alstom Grids e-terraplatform technology. It monitors, estimates and forecasts the energy generated from wind resources in real-time at various voltage levels. Following its operational success, this new project seeks to extend RTEs capability to manage and integrate other renewable energy sources into the grid, including photovoltaics and future off-shore wind farms resources.

Alstoms e-terraplatform will manage the network operation challenges created by the rapidly growing and highly variable photovoltaic capacity, which is currently at 2 GW installed capacity, on top of the 6.5 GW of wind power capacity in France.

As IPES is now becoming mission-critical, the e-terraplatform technology will provide the real-time information needed to assess the impacts of the Distributed Renewable Energy Sources in the grid reliability and power balance.

Our e-terraplatform technology is highly reliable, adaptive and flexible to the needs of our customers evolving requirements due to increasing challenges in connecting and managing more renewable and distributed energy into the grid.  Our aim as a technology market leader and grid management expert is to ease the transition with our e-terraplatform environment, said Karim El-Naggar, Vice-President Network Management Solutions, Alstom Grid.

This project is scheduled to be operational in July 2012.
