Alstom awarded retrofit contract for hard coal power plant in Rostock, Germany

23/07/2012

Extension of operation time and increase in efficiency

Alstom in Germany has secured an order for the retrofit of a low pressure turbine from Kraftwerks- und Netzgesellschaft mbH (KNG), Rostock. The power plant entered service in 1994. The retrofit is scheduled for September 2013 and will increase efficiency and extend the lifetime of the hard coal-fired plant.

The Rostock plant delivers 553 MW to the grid and furthermore produces 150 MW of thermal power for the district heating of the city of Rostock. The power plant Rostock currently generates more than half of the overall produced energy in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is of importance to the regional energy supply and grid stability. KNG awarded the retrofit to Alstom because of its ability to meet the delivery time of the components to the date of the already planned outage and to execute the installation work in parallel with the overhaul works. The contract also confirms the current trend in Germany to retrofit existing conventional power plants for efficiency improvement and to extend the lifetime of the units.
