Alstom in Poland has signed a contract worth close to 4 million (PLN 16 million) for the modernisation of a UK-50 type steam turbine at the Siekierki combined heat and power plant. The Siekierki power plant is located in the country's capital Warsaw and is owned by PGNiG TERMIKA SA.

The main aim of modernisation is to extend the turbine's lifetime by partially replacing elements of the degraded blading system. The scheduled works include some rotor and stator blades as well as the integration of new honeycomb seals. After the retrofit, the turbine will achieve better technical parameters such as a lower heat rate, thus resulting in better efficiency and an increase in power output by approximately 3 MW. Furthermore the steam flow of the turbine will be optimised for best use of the steam from the biomass boiler. The retrofit is scheduled to be completed by September 2013.

This contract further consolidates Alstom's retrofit and modernisation experience in Poland. Alstom is also currently modernising the steam turbines at the Polaniec, Opole, Kozienice and Lodz coal-fired power plants in the country and has also previously retrofitted the steam turbines at Belchatow, Poland's largest coal-fired power plant.
