Group has announced figures for the third quarter of 2012/13, showing a sustained level of orders at 5.1 billion, up 3% compared to last year. Transport had orders of 1.7 billion, Thermal Power of 1.6 billion, Grid 1.1 billion and Renewable Power 0.6 billion.

Here in the UK and Ireland, we received orders of £835 million in the third quarter and saw sales reach £890 million. This was largely due to Grid winning the Champa High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) contract in India, Thermal Power winning the Carrington gas-fired Combined Cycle Power Plant contract and the Kriel power station retrofit order in South Africa, and Transport winning further Northern Line underground business.

Steve Burgin, President of Alstom UK, said: Given the general global economic conditions, Alstom in the UK is doing extremely well, especially as much of our success is happening overseas markets.

Our Stafford site is a Group centre of excellence for high voltage direct current activity and has won a very large contract for an energy superhighway in India, whilst our Rugby Power team has successfully won the majority of a major contract to overhaul and refurbish a large South African power station.

Those contract wins, and these results, show that engineering is not only alive and well in the UK but also reaching out to win orders from around the world.

And through our bases in Stafford, where we employ around 2,000 people, and Rugby, where were no less important to the towns economy with 700 people, were making a real difference in terms of skills, training and engineering.

Our success is reflected in our continuing search for new employees for our Grid, Transport and Power businesses, where we currently have around 500 vacancies across the sectors in the UK.
