In December 2011 Mälarenergi placed orders with several suppliers to invest in a new plant which will provide the citizens of Västerås with heating and electricity. Parts of the existing plant had more than 50 years old and need to be renewed. The oldest parts will be phased out and replaced by a new, more modern one called Block 6. Several suppliers are involved in the project and Alstom is delivering the flue gas cleaning.

"Cold commissioning" is scheduled to begin in November 2013 and the plant is scheduled to start for the "Hot commissioning" in mid-February 2014. After that a test period will go on during spring 2014. The handover of the entire facility to Mälarenergi is planned about 1 week before midsummer 2014.
