Alstom and the Austrian electricity transmission network operator Austrian Power Grid AG (APG) have concluded a frame agreement to supply 220-kV and 380-kV gas-insulated electrical substations (GIS) between 2014 and 2018. The value of the projected order could be worth around 67 million.

The Austrian transmission grid is made up of a 380-kV-security ring. The electricity increasingly produced by renewable energy sources in eastern Austria will be transmitted via this powerful 380-kV-security ring to the consumer centres and pumped storage hydro power stations in the west. The finalisation of the Salzburg Line, which closes the 380- kV-security ring in western Austria, will help cope with the increasing power from renewables. Alstom´s electrical substations will be used for the Salzburg Line as well as for substations to feed-in the power from windfarms in eastern Austria.

With this frame agreement, APG carries out a switch in technology from air- to -gasinsulated electrical substations. GIS are more reliable and require less maintenance than air-insulated electrical substations. Due to their smaller size (up to five times smaller footprint), they can be accommodated in one building, reducing visual impact and shielding them from changing weather conditions.

Josef Reisel, Managing Director of ALSTOM Austria GmbH in Vienna, said: With this agreement, we increase our market share for Alstom Grid in Austria in the high voltage sector. The APG tender is one of the largest in the transmission grid sector and we are proud to contribute to the expansion of the Austrian electricity network.

Alstom and APG have already concluded several other frame agreements in the area of instrument transformers and digital control systems. Alstom has also supplied equipment for the Tauern and Ernsthofen substations which are among the four biggest network nodes in Austria.
