Alstom Grid has successfully delivered the 420 kV electrical substation in Barkeryd, Sweden, after two and a half years of construction. The switchyard, situated in the municipality of Nässjö, southern Sweden, will be connected to Svenska Kraftnäts South West Link.

The Barkeryd project includes the delivery of the 400 kV double busbar circuit breaker system, a 130 kV single busbar circuit breaker system as well as all engineering, civil works installation and commissioning. This 420 kV substation will serve Swedens South West Link, which consists of a new alternating current (AC) link between Barkeryd and Hallsberg, and a direct current (DC) link between Barkeryd and Hurva.

The Barkeryd station will feed power into the major South West Link. It is an essential step in ensuring a reliable and more sustainable power supply in Sweden, says Claes Schiebe, Alstom Grid Vice-President for Power Electronics Activities. This is just one of many milestones to come in one of the most exciting transmission projects worldwide.

The substation now sits adjacent to the site of the future South West Link High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Voltage Source Converter (VSC) station, which will also be designed and delivered by Alstom.

In December 2011, Alstom Grid was also selected to deliver the South West Link HVDC interconnection between Barkeryd and Hurva, the worlds first VSC multi-terminal-enabled scheme. The aim of the South West Link is to reinforce the existing AC (Alternating Current) network by increasing operational safety and power transmission capacity to southern Sweden.
