Alstom to cut emissions by 60% at Mlník power station

Alstom and power company Energotrans have signed a contract worth close to 30 million (CZK 750 million) for modernisation of the Mlník I power station which provides heat and power for capital city Prague and the surrounding area.  Under the contract, Alstom will significantly reduce NOx emissions from the six installed boilers.
 
The modernisation of Mlník I plant will provide Prague with an environmentally sustainable heat source. Inhabitants of the wider Prague area will feel the benefits immediately after the completion of the project, said Miroslav Krpec, General Manager of Mlník I power station.

The project will be launched before the end of this year and is expected to be completed in 2015. Some parts will enter into operation as of November 2014, complying with new emission limits a year before the European Industrial Emissions Directive comes into force. This directive requires all power sources over 50MW to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions to a level below 200mg/Nm3.
 
The project will have a significant environmental impact, reducing the current NOx emissions by 60%. To reduce NOx emissions, Alstom will apply a primary technology solution that includes modification and adjustment of the combustion system and the fuel preparation and feeding systems, as well as secondary solutions including deployment of the Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) technology which injects a chemical agent into the combustion chamber of the boiler.
 
This is the third contract of this kind we have won in the Czech Republic. It is a witness of our cutting-edge technological expertise. We are able to offer clients smart, high-quality solutions for economical and environmentally friendly operation. The modernisation of the Mlník plant will be partly financed from EU funds, said Alstom Country President Petr Brzezina.
 
This project further extends Alstom's broad reference base for NOx emissions reduction projects in Eastern Europe. The company has recently signed contracts in Gdansk, Kladno and Pocerady for similar projects.
