Alstom has been awarded a contract to provide steam turbine retrofit services for unit 2 of American Electric Powers D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant in Bridgman, Michigan. The project includes the manufacture, supply and installation of a new high pressure (HP) turbine module and three low pressure (LP) inner blocks for the nuclear steam turbine of the plants unit 2. Alstom recently executed the successful retrofit of D.C. Cook nuclear power plant unit 1.

Manufacturing of the unit 2 retrofit rotors is expected to begin immediately. The equipment will be installed during a planned 35 day outage and is scheduled to be operational in the fall of 2016.

Upgrading todays power plants with the latest advancements in power generation technology is an extremely cost-effective way of increasing the competitiveness of existing assets, according to Hans-Peter Meer, Senior Vice President, Alstom Thermal Services. The retrofit equipment for D.C Cook unit 2 is expected to add 60MW to its current 1,160 MW capacity, and provide enough electricity to power up to 60,000 additional homes.

Alstom has supported AEP with power generation equipment and services since the early 1970s. The Group provided the original turbine generator sets for D.C. Cooks unit 2, which entered service in 1978.

This second D.C. Cook retrofit is the latest in a series of steam turbine retrofit projects Alstom has delivered for North American customers. In October of 2011, Alstom was awarded a major contract to upgrade the low-pressure steam turbines across AEPs fleet of 1,300 MW coal-fired power plants.
