Trenitalia’s new regional train is beginning to take shape. Designed and produced by Alstom entirely in Italy, it is destined to improve the quality and comfort of travelling for thousands of passengers.
FS Italiane Managing Director Mauro Moretti, together with journalists and consumer representatives were today given their first view of it during the technical visit at Alstom’s site in Savigliano.
The guided visit to the production lines was organised with the aim of demonstrating its qualities and characteristics, and giving tangible proof of the progress that has been made since the results of the public call for tenders led to Alstom being awarded the 450 million euro contract for 70 trains, with an option for a further twenty.
The Managing Director of Gruppo FS Italiane, Mauro Moretti, was accompanied in the Alstom’s site in Savigliano by the President of Alstom Italia, Antonino Turicchi, and the President and Managing Director of Alstom Ferroviaria, Pierre-Louis Bertina.
The new trains commissioned from Alstom by Trenitalia represent a customised evolution of the already circulating Coradia Meridian, which guarantees reliability and rapid homologation (already started and expected to be completed in November 2013).
Comfortable and versatile, the new train will have three different configurations in order to respond better to different needs: metropolitan (with more standing room), regional (with more seats) and airport (with more baggage space). It will also be possible to modify the configuration simply and rapidly in order to satisfy special requests.
Entirely “made in Italy”, the train was designed and will be produced in Alstom’s centres of excellence in Savigliano, Sesto San Giovanni and Bologna. The delivery of the first train is planned for January 2014, and deliveries will continue from June 2014 at a rate of four trains a month.
The new trains are 95% recyclable and capable of reducing CO2 enissions, and will be equipped with videosurveillance cameras, luminous information screens, an audio system, notices in Braille, and 220 V sockets for cell phones and portable PCs.
Accessibility is guaranteed by the platform-level floor and the retractable foot boards installed on every door that eliminate the gap between the train and platform, which also allow easy access to less mobile passengers.
