The unit of Alstom in Taubaté (Sao Paulo), a centre of excellence in manufacturing equipment for the hydroelectric market, finished the assembly of the most potent Kaplan turbine ever produced in their facilities. The equipment, which weighs 145 tons and has a maximum power of 125.76 MW, will be used in the Santo Antonio do Jari project, hydro power plant that is under construction in the Amazon region and will generate 373.4 MW to the national system from the end of 2014 .

Alstom will supply Kaplan turbines and generators for the hydro plant, and hydromechanical equipment, lifting, SDCS (system of digital control), engineering, installation, supervision and commissioning for the three units.

Kaplan turbines are a future trend for the hydroelectric power generation market in Brazil for being ideal for rivers with low falls and allow the development of projects with lower environmental impacts. The development for this market is the focus of the company at this moment, which is also building its first Global Technology Centre in Latin America in the Taubaté unit, focusing on Kaplan hydro power plants.
