The foundation stone ceremony for Opole 5 & 6 took place on 3rd November at the Brzezie construction site, near Opole (south-western Poland). It is an important milestone in the project, which consists of two ultra-supercritical (USC) 900 MW power units for major Polish utility Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE). It follows the start of site activities in February 2014 and the acceptance of the basic design by the customer. Once operational, Opole will be the country’s largest and most efficient coal-fired facility, and will supply electricity to the equivalent of two million homes. Unit 5 is due to enter commercial operation in 2018 and unit 6 in 2019.
The foundation act was signed by representatives of the investor, consortium members and authorities, in the presence of Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz.
The plant is being built for PGE by a consortium composed of Polimex, Rafako and Mostostal Warsawa. Alstom is providing its expertise and support to the Consortium members for overall project management and general design, construction and commissioning of the plant, as well as the supply of the main powerblock equipment (boiler, steam turbine generator and environmental islands).
“Alstom is very proud to participate in the modernization of the Polish power sector and supply ultra-supercritical technologies. We will be manufacturing major equipment in Alstom’s factories in Poland as well as cooperating with Polish suppliers,” said Leslaw Kuzaj, President of Alstom in Poland.
