EP20 locomotives, developed by Alstom and Transmashholding (TMH) now make 6 services a day between Moscow and Sochi. The number of services was increased from 4 to 6 for the Winter Olympic Games.

The journey takes around 25 hours trains driven by EP20 able to operate under both alternating and continuous current make the Olympic route faster, as the journey is completed without having to change the engine along the route.

For the duration of the Olympics, the locomotives will be in good hands: Alstom /TMH engineers and maintenance operators provide round-the-clock diagnostics and maintenance in terminal stations and depots.

EP20 is the first dual-voltage passenger locomotive in Russia able to run at 200 km/h, and the first project of the new electric locomotive family designed by TRTrans, a joint Alstom-Transmashholding engineering center at the Russian Railways' request. Now 36 EP20 locomotives operate in Russia, with 200 locomotives to be supplied in total.

The locomotive is equipped with asynchronous traction drive, it can operate in extreme temperatures from -50 °C to +40 °C. Thanks to the state-of-the-art technologies and a modular design, the locomotive provides a high reliability level and low lifecycle cost.
