Alstom has delivered the highest capacity power transformer at 420 kV to Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited. The transformer (520 MVA, 3 phase, 420/235/33 kV) was delivered for the Bibiyana II 420 kV substation in Bangladesh, currently in development by Summit Bibiyana II Power Company Limited for Power Grid. The project will reinforce the extra-high voltage network of Bangladesh to provide a steady supply of power.

Bibiyana II substation is the first 420 kV switchyard in Bangladesh and will evacuate power from the nearby 340 MW power plant. The substation will be operated and maintained by Power Grid Company of Bangladesh,[1] the central transmission and distribution organisation of Bangladesh. The transformer for Bibiyana II was manufactured at Alstom T&D Indias state-of-the-art facility at Naini, one of the oldest manufacturing units of the company since 1957.

Rathin Basu, Managing Director of Alstom T&D India said, Alstom has contributed significantly to the establishment of the Bangladesh National Load Despatch Centre and its communication network. With power demand expected to reach 36 GW by 2030 in Bangladesh,[2] Alstom is prepared to step up its leadership and further its contribution to Bangladeshs energy development.

To meet growing energy demand in a reliable and efficient manner, Bangladesh is developing a comprehensive and integrated plan for power generation, transmission and distribution. The government aims to achieve 100 per cent access to electricity by 2021, calling for a network robust enough to integrate power generated from varied sources; this would ultimately enable efficient transmission and monitoring of the countrys power supply.
