Gibela, the South African rail transport company in which Alstom has a 61% holding, was officially presented in Johannesburg in South Africa on 30 July in the presence of the South African Deputy Minister of Transport and representatives of local institutions, partners, suppliers and the media.
Gibela was specially created to put into execution and run the PRASA* project, one of the largest rail projects in the world. Alstom will supply PRASA, via Gibela, 600 XTrapolis Mega suburban trains, technical assistance and supply of parts for an eighteen-year period.
The project also includes the creation of a new site at Dunnottar where Gibelas South African employees will produce the trains**. Gibela will thereby contribute to regenerating the countrys entire rail industry with an objective of 65% local components.
The priority for Gibela today is to build a reliable local supplier network. One hundred suppliers have already been preselected as potential working partners. Alstom, via Gibela, is making a commitment to its customers to favour the development of their local industrial fabric and adapt to their needs. In South Africa, this commitment is taking the form of an exceptional adventure!
