Alstom has signed a contract, worth approximately 36 million, with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) to supply equipment on a turnkey basis for Potlines 1 & 3 at EGAs core operating subsidiary, Dubai Aluminium (DUBAL, also known as EGA Jebel Ali), in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). The project will be executed from Alstoms competence centers in Europe and the Middle East. Continuous site activities will commence from June 2015, with project completion scheduled for March 2018.

As part of this contract, Alstom will improve the performance of four Gas Treatment Centers (GTCs) at the DUBAL aluminium smelter by adding compartments and supplying a complete new pot feed system (Alfeed) for the transportation of alumina from the GTCs to 520 new D18+ electrolysis cells. The new cells are the product of extensive EGA in-house modelling, aimed at optimizing energy consumption, increasing production capacity (by 10%) and reducing gaseous floride emissions (by 85%) by incorporating state of the art technologies.

Alstom is deeply thankful to EGA for choosing the company for modernizing their GTC. After several successful cooperations in the past, Alstom takes pride in the continuous trust of such a key customer in its expertise and capabilities to provide state-of-the-art solutions and to deliver value for their complex and challenging project, says Emmanuel Franc, Vice President Environmental Control Solutions at Alstom.

The core component of this project involves installing new reduction cell technology in existing Potlines 1 & 3 at EGA Jebel Ali. The simultaneous fitting of a new alumina feeding system and an upgrade of the GTCs are integral to this process, says Yousuf Bastaki, Senior Vice President, Major Projects at EGA. Having worked with Alstom on other projects over many years, we are confident that the contract will be fulfilled competently, within budget and on time.
