The Heritage train was originally created by London
Underground in 1990 when the Northern Line celebrated its 100
th anniversary. To mark this anniversary, London
Underground decided to refurbish one of the 1959 stock trains in
the livery used between 1922 and 1927.

The quality of refurbishment is the result of painstaking
effort and an eye for detail applied by two members of the ALSTOM
maintenance team, Andy Beal and Tony Edmonds, who have spent many
hours restoring the car interior to a far higher standard than
the original work.

ALSTOM is very proud of the new Visitor Centre, and Rob
Hallett, ALSTOM Metrocare Managing Director, said ' This
vehicle is not only practical, it is a symbol of the strong
commitment by ALSTOM to preserve the heritage and legacy London
Underground has generated through the years '.

Stock 59

The exterior of the refurbished 59 stock is made up of scarlet
bodysides, maroon doors, grey roof and cream with black lining
around the windows. The exterior refurbishment was an opportunity
for ALSTOM to display the performance of the new paint spraying
facility at Morden. The interior was painted in Cerulean
blue which is in fact green. The upholstery, which had
been matched by John Holdsworth of Halifax to the original cloth
supplied by the company in the 1920s, was thoroughly
cleaned and repaired on site.

The centre of the train has been modified to accommodate a
table and chairs for meetings. The original seating provides
areas for visitors to meet and chat in a less formal environment.
Lighting is supplied by the existing strip lights, which had to
be converted by one of the Metrocare Train Technicians to run on
240v.
