The units will be manufactured in the industrial site of Santa Perpetua in Barcelona.

In Santo Domingo, the Dominican operator OPRET awarded Alstom a contract worth 101 million to supply 15 Metropolis train sets of three cars each, for the line 2 of the Santo Domingo metro. The contract also includes maintenance services as well as an option for 6 additional trains. The commercial service is scheduled for early 2012. Alstom already supplied 19 similar units to line 1 in 2008.

The units will be designed and manufactured in Alstom´s industrial site in Santa Perpetua de Mogola, Barcelona. Santa Perpetua has become a reference in exports for rolling stock in Spain, which has provided the rolling stock for projects such as London, Washington, Shanghai and Santo Domingo metros, and tramway systems for the cities of amongst others Rabat, Oran and Constantine.

Line 2 of Santo Domingo metro will run from east to west, connecting Los Alcarrizos with San Luis. The new line will transport around 400,000 people daily and will cross the existing line 1 also served by Alstom Metropolis trains since 2008. The line 2 is 21 km long and will be served by 20 stations, can transport around 400,000 passengers daily and is foreseen to go into service at the beginning of 2012.

The Metropolis trains are of the Alstom´s standard Metropolis platform. Each unit is composed of three cars, of which two are motor cars with a driver cabin and one trailer car. However the trains are designed to incorporate in the future, if so wished, one, two or three additional cars.

The passenger carrying capacity is 64 seated and up to 617 standing. Each of the end cars has an easy-access area designed for handicapped people. The middle car, in accordance with the customers specifications, has been designed as a multifunctional area. The trains are equipped with video surveillance and passenger information systems, smoke detectors and air conditioning.

To date, more than 4,000 Metropolis cars have been sold in different cities such as Barcelona, Warsaw, Singapore, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile.
