Alstom has introduced an assessment process for its main suppliers and sub-contractors that includes three types of assessment: a sustainability assessment managed by EcoVadis, light audits and in-depth audits.
Sustainability assessments
A pilot phase was carried out by Alstom that led in 2009 to a three years deployment plan of assessments. At end of March 2011, 850 suppliers have been assessed, representing about 31% of the Group’s sourcing volume (including the new sector ALstom Grid). These assessments are part of the selection process of Alstom's suppliers.
These assessments are conducted by EcoVadis, a company based in France, which specialises in the evaluation of Corporate Social Responsibility. The assessments are based on environmental, social and ethical criteria, including supplier requirements to be passed on to secondary suppliers. Questionnaires are adapted to take into account the specific issues of about 50 of Alstom's commodities.

Light audits
In order to complete the suppliers' qualification audit, a sustainable development section has been developed and is conducted by Alstom quality managers. 209 of such audits had been conducted so far.
