Alstom has set the target to reduce Non-methane Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions intensity by 10% between 2014 and 2020.
A new relevant indicator was created in 2017 to measure the impact of the activity on the VOC emissions: the VOC intensity, which corresponds to the quantity of VOC emitted related to the painting activity. The activity is measured by the number of units painted (a unit can be a locomotive, a coach or a component). The VOC intensity is 65,4 kg per unit in 2017.
In Alstom, the VOC’s emissions are mainly linked to degreasing and painting activities. Emissions have been reduced since 2010 through efforts done to substitute solvent-based paints with water-based paints.
Recently, reduction of painting activities in Barcelona and development of stainless steel production (which does not require painting), for India, South-Africa, Brazil has contributed to this result.
