It has also confirmed the choice of ALSTOM to supply the
rolling stock, comprising 15 two-car trainsets, for a total of 56
million euros. This new rubber-tyred metro, which will link
Ouchy, in the south of Lausanne, to the district of Epalinges in
the north, is due to enter commercial operation in 2005.

The train control system proposed by ALSTOM for
the Lausanne metro, Urbalis, is a system with a strong potential
for evolution, which can be operated at different levels of
automation. In its most advanced version, the metro system can be
fully automated, allowing trains to run automatically without
drivers. The Administration of Switzerland's Vaud Canton will
decide on the chosen version after a complete analysis of the
different aspects of the project.

In order to offer the travellers a complete service as soon
as the metro is operational, the administration has chosen to
implement this project in one phase, instead of the two initially
planned.

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in over 60
countries, ALSTOM's Transport Sector offers cutting-edge
products and services to four distinct types of customers:
urban transit authorities and operators; intercity passenger
rail operators and rolling stock owners; rail freight
operators; and intercity railway infrastructure owners.
ALSTOM's Transport Sector, with 4.4  billion euros in
sales in 2001, is among the world's leading suppliers to the
railway industry.
