ALSTOM has been awarded a contract to supply the first two Circulating Fluidised Bed (CFB) boilers ever to be installed in Brazil. Under the contract, ALSTOM will provide two modular CFB boilers for the Alumina do Norte do Brasil S.A. (Alunorte) Expansion 2 Project in Brazil.
The boilers will use ALSTOMs unique modular CFB design that provides efficient operation, low emissions and fuel flexibility. The boilers will be built using bottom-supported modules that allow for the use of smaller cranes and yield a fast erection schedule. The design of the boilers will be similar to that used on the Redbank Power Station in Australia. This project was the recipient of the 2001 Australian Institute of Engineers National Engineering Excellence Award in the category of Environment.
Each boiler will generate 250 tons/hour of low-pressure steam for the alumina refinery; however, the design allows for conversion to high-pressure steam generation for the future addition of a steam turbine for electricity generation. Coal and oil will be the primary and backup fuels, respectively.
In addition to the boilers, ALSTOMs scope also includes major electrical equipment, stack, baghouse, feed pumps, deaerator and oil storage and pumping systems. Over 75% of the project scope will be manufactured in Brazil. Erection of the boilers will be performed by Alunorte.
The main Alunorte shareholders are the Brazilian company Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) and the Norwegian company Norsk Hydro. Alunorte processes bauxite ore into alumina at their Barcarena facility that will become the largest alumina refinery in the world upon completion of the Expansion 2 project. The Barcarena facility is 40 km from Belém, capital of the State of Pará, in the Amazon region of Brazil.
