ALSTOM has recently been awarded a turnkey Engineer, Procure and Construct (EPC) contract to provide a new power plant for Prony Energies in New Caledonia. Prony Energies is 75% owned by Enercal (New Caledonian Electrical Company) and 25% by Elyo (part of the French Suez group).

The project, whose commercial operation is expected in May 2007, will have an output of 50 MW and is the first coal-fired power plant to be installed in New Caledonia. The contract also includes an option for an additional 50 MW unit.

The first unit of 50 MW, which represents more than 35% of the island’s installed capacity, will provide electricity for public consumption. The second optional unit will provide electricity for the new Goro Nickel treatment plant.

ALSTOM’s scope of supply includes one pulverised coal-fired boiler, associated machine room and electrical balance of plant.

This new project confirms the presence of ALSTOM in New Caledonia and follows the Centrale de Ducos contract, awarded for the supply of a 25 MW gas turbine power plant for Enercal, which has been in operation since October 2003.
