ALSTOM will build the CITADIS trams, which are based on
service-proven, standardized and modular components, to
CANCA’s distinct esthetic and practical requirements. These
include an exterior design by Avant-Première and an interior
layout that makes the trams easily accessible for all passengers,
including those with impaired mobility.

Plans call for the building of three tramway lines covering
40 kilometers by 2015. The first line, nine kilometers long with
21 stations, is expected to open at the beginning of 2007. As
this line will run through Place Masséna and Place
Garibaldi; Canca asked for the tram to be able to cross them
without the need for overhead power lines. The CITADIS trams will
therefore be equipped with nickel-metal hydride batteries, such
as already used by electric buses. The first trams will be
delivered at the beginning of 2006.

Philippe Mellier, President of ALSTOM's Transport Sector,
said:
"CITADIS is proving to be a success in several cities around
the world and yet remains unique to each one thanks to its
personalised design. I am sure that the inhabitants of Nice will
be thrilled with it and I am delighted that ALSTOM is
accompanying CANCA in this new project."
