The contract totals 240 million euros, including the options
of 40 trains. ALSTOM´s share being 123 million euros,
Bombardier´s share is valued at 117 million euros.

The scope of the Salzgitter-based consortium
leader includes the delivery of the mechanical part, the bogies
and the brake system. Bombardier Transportation is going to
supply the electrical equipment from its sites Hennigsdorf and
Mannheim. We are pleased to deliver the new
generation with state-of-the-art technology and to contribute to
a sustainable and environment-friendly mobility for the citizens
of Hamburg, said Andreas Knitter, Managing Director of
ALSTOM in Salzgitter. The dependable consortium has previously
delivered the successful DT4 predecessor generation, says
Ulrich Sieg of the Management Board of the HOCHBAHN.
Im convinced that the excellent cooperation between
ALSTOM/Bombardier and the HOCHBAHN will again guarantee a smooth
operation. Klaus Baur, Chairman of the Board of Bombardier
Transportation Germany, said: With this new metro for the
future HafenCity, our consortium will deliver a first-class
product for one of Europe's most modern urban centers. We're
proud of Hamburger Hochbahns vote of confidence in our
products for this new project." For the first time, the three-unit underground
trains feature open gangways, allowing passengers to move freely
from one end of the train to the other. They will successively
replace the vehicles of type DT3 that had been manufactured by a
consortium under the leadership of ALSTOM in Salzgitter between
1966 and 1971. As of autumn 2011, one part of the DT5 fleet
will be used principally on a new connection between the emerging
quarter
HafenCity and Hamburgs city centre.
The City Line U4 will connect the future city area
(which is going to be built from 2007 as part of the biggest city
development project in Europe) with the city centre in three
minutes.
 Increased passenger comfort through new
interior fittings, as well as improved safety equipment of the
vehicles should entice more and more automobile drivers to change
over to public mass transport. The trendsetting interior design
is characterized by full air conditioning, multi-purpose areas
for wheelchair users and prams as well as a modern passenger
information system with large LCD displays. A proven fire
protection sprinkler system greatly enhances the safety of the
passengers and the train drivers. Due to the use of stainless steel and new
manufacturing technologies for the carbodies, the exterior walls
can be easily cleaned and supersede extensive paintings. The manufacturers will also further improve the
already exemplary ecological standard of the vehicles. Besides a
high recycling rate of the used materials, the trains will be
noise-optimized. In spite of additional equipment, such as the
air conditioning system, they will reach the same low noise level
as their predecessor generation which is among the most silent
underground trains. This is possible in part due to the quiet,
water-cooled three-phase AC traction motors.  Technical data DT5:
